A while back, I realised my car was sitting in the driveway more than it was on the road. Between my remote work and doing my bit for the planet, the idea of giving it up for good was more inviting than daunting. What began as a decision to cut down on emissions, save some money and prioritise my health has led to an unexpectedly rich journey with the regional and metropolitan trains of Western Australia, a journey that’s taught me the delight of both travel and simplicity.
Living in Toodyay at the time, commuting to the city for work with clients and projects, the AvonLink train quickly became my favourite mode of transport. The AvonLink travels through the stunning Avon Valley, showcasing natural beauty that shifts with each season. The familiar rhythm of the train and the changing scenery turned these rides into small retreats—a perfect mix of calm and anticipation. Sitting back as the countryside passed by, I found a kind of mindfulness in the experience that I could never have behind the wheel of a car.
A Wellness Day Out
One day, a friend and I decided to hop on the AvonLink and head to Cunderdin for a leisurely lunch at the quirky Etamogah Pub. It was just a spontaneous adventure, a “day out,” yet it ended up sparking a new ritual. Now, these little rail escapes are part of my wellness routine. We catch different trains, visit different spots, and let the day unfold. The agenda? Simply to walk, browse, chat, and land somewhere for lunch. It’s a day for wellness, a break from routine, and a reminder that journeys can be destinations in themselves.
There’s a meditative quality in train travel—the rhythmic sway, the gentle rumble, the chance to gaze out the window and not worry about the road. With no driving responsibilities, my mind is free to wander, to be in the moment. Conversation flows naturally, whether I’m sharing thoughts with a travel buddy or striking up chats with fellow passengers. These unhurried exchanges connect us, turning travel companions into kindred spirits, if only for the day.
The Benefits of Walking
And, of course, there’s the walking. Getting off the train at each new destination, I’ve found that strolling through different towns offers an opportunity to engage fully with my surroundings, breathing in the fresh air, and stretching my legs in a way that feels both refreshing and grounding. It’s a complete experience that renews my energy—body, mind, and spirit.
Choosing public transport has changed my perspective, making each journey a meaningful experience rather than a mere means to an end. What started as a practical, eco-conscious decision has become a gift to myself: a way to cultivate mindfulness, appreciate beauty, and connect more deeply with the world around me.
Now, wherever I go, I’m delighted to embrace the journey—not just the destination.
