We become what we think about

It’s a phrase that has resonated through the annals of self-help literature and motivational speeches throughout time, yet its essence transcends mere words. It dives deeply into the core of our being and hints at the transformative potential within.

Let’s dissect this idea through the following model co-created with my long time friend and colleague Donna McGeorge:

The Trinity of Faith Belief Knowing

Fear

In the complex landscape of our minds, fear potentially looms large over our thoughts, casting shadows of doubt with our aspirations and dreams. It operates subtly, imposing limitations that stop us imagining a prosperous future. What’s more, we may remain oblivious to its grip, going about our daily routines unaware of its influence on our thoughts and actions. It’s only when we start to deliberately pay attention that we are confronted with the realisation that our decisions are often fear-driven. It’s then we’re compelled to reassess our approach. This awakening presents an opportunity for transformation—an opportunity to shine a light on, and confront the barriers fear has placed around us, and re-write our life script.

Hope

Through creating awareness and listening to our thoughts we can feel a glimmer of hope emerge through the darkness of fear. It is the beacon that guides us through the storm, illuminating the path to possibility. It’s the belief that despite our fears, there exists the potential for something better, something brighter. With hope as our compass, we navigate the unknown with courage and resilience.

Faith

And so, we transition from hope to faith. Faith is the catalyst for transformation, the unwavering belief in the inherent goodness of life. It’s the flicker of light in the darkness, the assurance that our journey holds promise and purpose. With faith as our companion, we take the first bold step into the realm of possibility, trusting in the unseen forces that shape our destiny.

Belief

As faith blossoms, it evolves into belief. Belief is the cornerstone of our conviction, the firm foundation upon which our dreams take root. It’s the knowledge that our desires are not merely wishful thinking, but tangible realities waiting to be realized. With belief as our anchor, we cultivate a mindset of abundance and possibility, sowing the seeds of our future with unwavering confidence.

Knowing

Finally, we arrive at knowing. Knowing transcends faith and belief, embodying a state of absolute certainty in the goodness of life. It’s the deep-rooted understanding that our thoughts have the power to shape our reality, and our reality reflects the truths we hold within. With knowing as our guide, we surrender to the flow of life, trusting in the divine orchestration of our destiny.

Here’s the kicker: Knowing entrenches the idea so deeply within us that it inevitably manifests in reality. Our thoughts shape our actions, and our actions shape our lives. When we know with absolute certainty that our lives will be good, we unconsciously align our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours with that reality. It’s not a matter of wishful thinking or blind faith; it’s a profound understanding of the interconnectedness between mind and matter.

In essence, the journey from fear to knowing is a testament to the transformative power of our thoughts. As we dare to embrace hope, cultivate faith, and nurture belief, we unlock the infinite potential that resides within us.

And in the timeless wisdom of Florence Scovel Shinn, we find validation of this truth: “Your word is your wand.”

Just as she professed, our thoughts, beliefs, and knowing are the incantations that wield the power to shape our destinies, summoning forth the reality we dare to imagine.

The moral to this story: change your thoughts and you change your life.
